Plain-English definitions for essential equipment terminology, hive anatomical parts, and apiary management concepts.
Apiary
A location where one or more beehives are maintained by a beekeeper; also called a bee yard.
Brood Box
The lower deep box or boxes of a Langstroth hive where the queen lays eggs and workers raise larvae into adult bees.
Nuc (Nucleus Colony)
A small established colony usually consisting of 4 or 5 frames with an active laying queen, drawn comb, brood, and honey reserves.
Queen Excluder
A precision-spaced metal or plastic grid that allows worker bees to pass through to honey supers while blocking the larger queen from laying eggs in honey comb.
Refractometer
An optical or digital instrument measuring the moisture percentage in extracted honey (safe storage requires under 18.6% moisture).
Smoker
A metal canister with bellows used to generate cool smoke that interrupts bee alarm pheromones and initiates a feeding instinct, calming the colony.
Super
A box positioned above the brood nest specifically intended for bees to store surplus honey for human harvest.
Varroa Destructor
An external parasitic mite that attacks honeybees and broods, transmitting debilitating viruses like Deformed Wing Virus (DWV).
